What is Acetyl-L-Carnitine?

The molecule acetyl-L-carnitine is naturally formed in human cells by the enzymatic addition of an acetyl group to L-carnitine, an amino acid derivative that is synthesized from lysine and methionine.  Unlike L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine is more easily absorbed in the GI tract and more efficiently negotiates the blood-brain barrier.

How does Acetyl-L-Carnitine work?

  • Functions in fat metabolism by carrying fatty acids across the walls of the mitochondria

  • Helps to support healthy blood sugar by increasing the metabolic uptake of sugar in the brain, heart, and muscles

  • Transports toxic compounds generated during oxidation out of the mitochondria to prevent their accumulation

  • The acetyl group can serve as a metabolic source of acetylcholine, a brain neurotransmitter
